THE SUN IS SO FAMILIAR song title is a reference to something in my documentary film Hubert Selby Jr: It/ll Be Better Tomorrow (at 52:04).
Selby is shown teaching a grad school class on English fiction writing at USC. He’s reading a section of a student’s paper to the class and commenting “‘The sun is so familiar’…what a beautiful use of words there…’The sun is so familiar’ Wow! That is a brilliant little line.”
(It’s not clear which student he was talking about, but if anyone knows, let me know and I’ll add the credit.)
