You’re a public school teacher.
\nYeah, right. So, you know that teachers have to
\nearn money in the summer, right? We’re
\nnotoriously underpaid?<\/p>\n

So I do the cliche thing,
\nI’m a house painter.
\nHouse painting saved my behind
\nmany times in my life.
\nWhen everything else fell through
\nsomeone always needs their house painted<\/p>\n

“So how’s the other guy look?”
\nLike you killed someone?
\nI said “Worse.”
\nYeah.<\/p>\n

And a woman came up to me
\nand said,
\n“Well, that’s<\/em> blatant.”
\n“Excuse me?”
\n“Who’d you kill?!”<\/p>\n

And I’m like “What is up with
\nthis shirt??”
\nI said
\n“I’m retiring this shirt!”<\/p>\n

It’s funny, a lot of people burning them
\nare probably very concerned with their
\ncarbon footprint.
\nYea, I think burning a Nike
\nprobably puts as much crap in the air as
\ndriving your car for a week.”<\/p>\n

Can you remember back in the 70s and 80s
\nwhen they were burning L.P.s because of their content?
\nYeah.
\nCan you imagine how bad that was for the air?
\nAnd because of disco.<\/p>\n

They just crush ’em, cause of disco.
\nDid you hear about? Do you remember?
\nYou weren’t there, at that
\nbaseball game where they crushed
\ndisco records, and there was a riot?
\nNo!<\/p>\n

You ever hear about that?
\nDisco sucks kind of thing?
\nYou would have enjoyed it.
\n(I would have!)
\nBut I like disco.<\/p>\n

But there was a riot
\npeople got so excited…
\ninstead of bat day
\nor whatever day, at the ball park,
\nit was “bring a disco record and we’ll
\ncrush them.”<\/p>\n

They didn’t wanna burn them.
\nYou burn a couple thousand vinyl records
\nyou’re gonna choke the people in the stands, so…<\/p>\n

They had a bulldozer. They were gonna bulldoze ’em.
\nThe people were so excited to destroy disco
\nfiguratively, people probably bought
\ndisco records to destroy.<\/p>\n

I don’t think that presidents actually ever
\nreally stimulate the economy.
\nI think the only way they stimulate it is
\nby encouraging people to burn their Nikes and
\nbuy new ones.<\/p>\n

Make America Burn Shoes Again.<\/p>\n

They had the mini-bats and they were bashing records
\ndid a quarter-million dollars damage to the stadium.
\nAnd a lot of people got arrested.
\nAnd a lot of people got hurt.
\nBad scene, man.
\nSo don’t do that, people.
\nAt home, or anywhere.<\/p>\n

So I saved a pigeon.
\nThat’s the biggest news of the day.
\nI saved a pigeon.
\nMy wife and I saved a pigeon<\/p>\n

…oh, and then they blew it up.
\nThey blew up all the records.
\nThey crushed ’em, then they blew ’em up.
\nOh, and then the home team had to forfeit
\n’cause the field was too messed up to play.
\nYeah, the White Sox forfeited to the Detroit Tigers.<\/p>\n

I wanna segue into that, the bird falling out
\nof the sky because of my poem.
\nYeah!
\nThat’s a line in your poem too.
\nI love that line.<\/p>\n

Yeah, I’m talking to a co-worker of mine
\nwho has 20 chickens.
\nAnd I’m telling her the story and she says,
\n“What you gotta do is jump up and down and
\nput your arms out to show that you’re the boss…”
\n(chicken dominance?)
\n“…and that you’re bigger…”
\nyeah, the last time he attacked me I just…<\/p>\n

She said, “I need help saving a pigeon.”
\nI didn’t even ask questions, I just, “OK”
\nWent into action.
\nShe picks up gardening gloves for both of us.
\nI’m gloving up as I’m walking out.<\/p>\n

And there’s a pigeon stuck in our fence
\nupside down, by one foot
\nbetween two slats on the fence
\nbleeding, with a broken leg.<\/p>\n

He was flappin’.
\nWe didn’t just start grabbin’ at him.
\nWe had a little conversion about it.
\nKinda like E.R. people.
\nTriage.
\nYeah.
\n“Well, how do we get this guy’s head
\nout of this tree?”
\nYou don’t just start pullin’.<\/p>\n

I was like “Should we just break the slat?”
\nShe was like “I don’t think we need to, and it
\nmight hurt him more.”<\/p>\n

So I reached gently but firmly under its
\nkind of its shoulder over the wings, and just held it.
\nShe pulled one of the slats on the fence toward her.
\nNudged its leg up through the slat until it got away.<\/p>\n

Then I just set it down on the ground.
\nWe looked out there about an hour later,
\nit flew away.
\nAnd DJ says she’s seen a one legged, one footed
\npigeon before, so I think it can survive this.<\/p>\n
