This collaboration is something I’ve wanted

Some dude tried to stab me

And they said “Well, we thought
\nyou were one of them.”<\/p>\n

And I’m like, “No man, I’m
\nnot one of them<\/em>. And I’m not one
\nof you<\/em>, either.”<\/p>\n

I asked the guy who owned the music store
\nif he knew any drummers.
\nHe’s like, “Well, there’s this guy<\/em>….
\nHe’s a really good drummer, BUT<\/em>….”<\/p>\n

In my experience, “Really good drummer…”
\nis almost always followed by a “BUT<\/em>….”<\/p>\n

I mean, they hit<\/em> things. Think about the kind
\nof people that attracts.<\/p>\n

We got to enter this place and
\nit was a whole other culture.
\nIt had its own rules.<\/p>\n

I remember it had a straight jacket
\nhanging on the wall.
\nand if anyone misbehaved they’d
\nput you in-
\nthey’d wrestle you down…<\/p>\n

But that place was kinda like
\nthe circus, right?
\nBecause you never knew what to expect.<\/p>\n

That’s the house where my roommate
\nwas later murdered by his
\nchildhood friend.<\/p>\n

She came back at one point
\nand she’d done acid so many days in a row
\nthat it was like,
\n“Lights on, but no one’s home, man…”<\/p>\n

He was cuttin’ up carrots and he stopped
\nand he said,
\n“What if I cut my finger off,
\nwould that still be me?”<\/p>\n

…Waking up with a cop in my room
\nstanding over my bed, saying
\n“What’s your name, boy?<\/em>”<\/p>\n

I think he even said boy<\/em>.<\/p>\n

But I said “Michael. What’s yours?”
\nAnd he said “Don’t be smart, boy.”<\/p>\n

I realized right then that
\ncops don’t want <\/em>you smart.
\nLike he literally said, “Don’t be smart<\/strong><\/em>.”<\/p>\n

He helped me out, he
\ninspired me a lot
\nand gave me confidence
\nfor doing my thing,
\nwhen I didn’t even know what my thing
\nwas<\/em>.<\/p>\n

But I figured it out.
\nYou helped me with that, too.<\/p>\n

And you me, brother.<\/p>\n

Love it! The title says it all… We ARE done living in the past – this puts it all to bed… There is redemption in the end, brother – we proved that (and the end of the song testifies to that.) …and we still believe us! It doesn’t get any better than that.<\/p>\n
