Man, he was stealin’ schnitzels and sausages
\nand stickin’ ’em up his-<\/p>\n

I had this really crappy apartment in Jamestown
\n(me too)
\nThe heater didn’t work.
\nSo you’d go to the library to stay warm?
\nYeah, basically I was hanging out with a lot
\nof people who were in the same boat as I was.<\/p>\n

You didn’t have fleas because it was so cold
\nI had a heater so the fleas didn’t die<\/p>\n

Yeah, there’s an upside and a downside to everything<\/p>\n

So I spent a lot of time I the library and
\nwhile I was there, I just educated myself.<\/p>\n

I used to skip class so I could get an education at the library.<\/p>\n

No tips
\nsalt shaker, pepper shaker
\nex-sugar shaker waitress
\nDirty looks,
\nempty coffee cups
\nstained by the lips of lovers
\nAll washed up.<\/p>\n

You’re never gonna get the right people in there
\nbecause the right people in there
\nare always going to be the

\nBecause anyone who wants to be in that position
\nand workss to the point to be president or governor
\nhas somethin’ wrong with ’em.

I’ll be recoding and I’ll talk to myself while mixing
\nsometimes out loud
\nAnd my wife will giggle about it
\nlovingly giggle about it
\nlike “Oh, he’s talking to himself again.”<\/p>\n

Because I’ll\u2026it’s not just mumbling
\nlike (ramurjrjfufrffaufg)
\nIt’s conversations between me the artist
\nand me the recording engineer
\nSo it’ll be like the same kind of conversations
\nI would have in a studio when I was the artist
\ntaking to the recording engineer
\nand \/ or producer.<\/p>\n

But I’ll say out loud to myself,
\nloud enough that my wife can hear
\nit from the other room,
\nand can hear most of what I’m saying,
\nI’ll say thing things like:
\n“Maybe we should add a little reverb and EQ on this vocal
\nbut turn down the volume, is that cool?”<\/p>\n

And then the artist me will reply back to the engineer me
\nand say, “Sounds like a plan. Let’s do it.
\nBut let’s try it without the
\nreverb first just the EQ then turn it down and listen to it.
\nThere’s already a lot of reverb on that other vocal.”<\/p>\n

And then the engineer (me) will say “OK, let’s
\ndo that, but if it doesn’t work,
\nlet’s try it my way.”<\/p>\n

Actually that\u2019s a myth. But
\nthere\u2019s always one or two people
\nwho really kinda fulfill the myth.<\/p>\n

So what did you think of that club

One of the simple decisions I made was
\nhe had, in his written text,
\nhis words first,
\nand Kip’s movie poster words second.<\/p>\n

I looked at it and I just immediately
\nrealized, “No, the trailer comes before the movie.”<\/p>\n

And I did it and it just made such a huge difference.<\/p>\n

And Phil was blown away by it.
\nHe’s like “Man, good move putting Kip’s part
\nfirst, that’s so brilliant. Why didn’t
\nI think of that?<\/p>\n

Here’s what I wrote him back.
\nAnd this is useful

\nI think it’s a good
\nredemption in the third act
\nto end with here.<\/p>\n

So I\u2019m gonna read this
\nthing that I wrote to Phil.
\nAnd I really like what I said.<\/p>\n

We’re actually thinking of calling our next record
\n“We Believe Us.”<\/p>\n

I typed it by accident as a typo
\nand I liked it.
\nPhil said “Hey, I believe us.”<\/p>\n

If you don\u2019t believe yourself
\nwho’s gonna believe you?<\/p>\n

So I said, about moving
\nKip’s part first, moving the movie trailer
\npart to the beginning of the song
\nand then having Phil’s part,
\nwhich is kind of “the movie”,
\nafter that.<\/p>\n

I said
\n“Sometimes something that simple
\nis what makes something perfect.
\nIn music, writing, filmmaking,
\nany sequential media.<\/p>\n

And also with things like
\na business or managing
\ngroups of people.<\/p>\n

When you do it right,
\nthe result is so powerful it’s like
\n“Man, that’s so perfect, that’s the only
\nway it ever could have been like that.”<\/p>\n

We watched the guy fall from a
\n20 foot ladder.<\/p>\n

It all started back at community college,
\nright? English 101 and Radio Broadcasting class.<\/p>\n

It was a Sunday. We happened to be hanging out
\nat the\u2026
\nHe did The Gospel Hour.
\nHe had to go, man.<\/p>\n

He saw us there and said “Can you take over for me?”
\nSo we took over for him.<\/p>\n

Is that how we got on radio?<\/p>\n

Our professor said there’s two bands you can’t play,
\nThe Sex Pistols and Frank Zappa.<\/p>\n

So we just got our FCC licenses
\nand we had to break them in.<\/p>\n

So it was the gospel hour, all these
\nlittle old ladies were expecting
\nMahalia Jackson
\nand then we blast ’em with some
\nZappa.<\/p>\n

And I remember there was a big
\nfervor on campus after that.<\/p>\n

And we actually fed it
\nbecause I wrote a letter to the editor
\nas if I was a person who was offended.<\/p>\n

So that was kind of our start in radio.
\nBut we would do spoken word stuff
\nwe would do our own stuff
\npoetry
\nand I remember you’d bringing in your guitar.
\nIt was more almost just like a hang out.
\nKinda like this now.<\/p>\n
